Mother Goosed, now with Monkeys

February 13, 2010 at 11:18 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

At least two of the Mother Goosed contributors are big fans of monkeys.  No, not the MonkeesMonkeys.  Plural.

You might win something if you can guess who they are.  The contributors, that is.  Not the monkeys.

In the meantime, there is a terrific short story by Kij Johnson that has nothing to do with Mother Goosed or Mother Goose, but has a lot to do with monkeys.   Click here to visit Kij Johnson’s Website and read her short story, 26 Monkeys, Also The Abyss.  It won a 2009 World Fantasy Award.

What’s Next?

October 17, 2009 at 3:53 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

Mother Goosed: Twisted Rhymes for Modern Times isn’t for sale just yet.  It’s headed off to the printer next week (week of October 17th).  Look for a mid-November release by Southport Press.  In the meantime, some of its artists and writers are asking, “What’s next?”  We’ve been living with this project since March ’09 and are ready for new adventures.

Just because Mother Goosed will soon be in book form, it doesn’t mean that the concept needs to end.  Mother Goosed may resurface as a Web comic or as art in other forms.  Nursery rhymes and fairy tales offer fertile ground for the imagination, so look forward to more twisted rhymes ahead.

2010 will bring a project of comic book art, other 2-D art, prose, and poetry on the subject of mythology.  What’s your favorite myth?  Southport Press will invite artists and writers to twist, turn upside down, and otherwise retell some of the world’s great myths.  They can be wise; they can be funny; or they can keep you up at night.   Project and submission information will be made available in early 2010, most likely.

We’re also kicking the tires on an oral history project that could take on not only print and Web forms, but video and audio, too.  Some of the best stories are true-life stories and many of them are never written down or recorded.  This project may be as sober or as hilarious as the personalities who are involved in its creation and who are profiled through it.

For a look at how oral history and comic book art can beautifully intersect, check out The New Press’ publication of Studs Terkel’s Working, as adapted by Harvey Pekar and as edited by Paul Buhle.  Click on the link for Paul Buhle for a Book TV presentation on Studs Terkel, Working, and this new book.

The ability of these projects and others to become reality depends on everyone purchasing a copy of Mother Goosed for themselves, their family, and friends.   Only 1,000 copies will be available, so get in line soon for your own.
